How to Choose Your First HYROX Race

You’ve been curious about HYROX for a while. Maybe you’ve watched a few videos, maybe a friend has been nudging you to give it a go. Now you’re ready to commit, almost. The last hurdle is picking the right event. Knowing how to choose your first HYROX race makes the whole thing far less daunting and sets you up for a day you’ll genuinely enjoy, rather than one you simply survive.

How I picked mine

I’ll tell you exactly how I chose my first one, because it wasn’t complicated. I went and watched a race, absolutely vibed with the whole atmosphere, and signed up to the first event happening in the country I was in. That turned out to be three months away. Since it was my first experience, I went for the open division and just soaked the whole thing up. Coming from a CrossFit background, part of me thought I should jump straight to pro, but I’m glad I didn’t. I gave myself twelve weeks to prepare, mostly focused on running. CrossFit rarely asks you to run more than eight hundred metres at a time, and usually only for a few rounds, so building my running volume was the piece I really needed.

Pick the right division

Your first big decision is how you’ll take part. Doubles, where you split the work with a partner, is the friendliest way in and a lovely way to share the nerves. Singles is the full solo challenge. There are also open and pro weights, and for a first race open is almost always the smart choice. It lets you focus on finishing strong and enjoying yourself, rather than fighting the loading. There’s no prize for going hardest on day one.

Think about location and timing

A race close to home takes a huge amount of stress out of your first outing. No early flights, no strange hotel bed the night before, no logistics spiralling out of control. And give yourself a realistic runway. Something like eight to twelve weeks out lets you build proper, specific fitness without cramming. Booking a race next weekend on a whim is a fast track to a miserable morning. Picking a date you can actually prepare for is how you set yourself up to love it.

How to choose your first HYROX race with confidence

  • Start with doubles or singles open. Ease yourself in.
  • Favour a local venue to keep the logistics simple.
  • Give yourself eight to twelve weeks to prepare properly.
  • If you’re coming from another sport, be honest about the gaps, and for most people that gap is running volume.

Choose well and your first HYROX becomes the start of something, not a one off ordeal. I signed up on a whim of good vibes and never looked back, and that finish line feeling has a habit of bringing people straight back for more.
